Best AI for resume tailoring in 2026: nine tools ranked
Nine tools that rewrite a resume for one job posting, ranked on six criteria stated before the list, with every price and free allowance read on 18 September 2026. The ranking puts keeping your facts ahead of keyword scores, and ends with a prompt you can use in any chatbot that makes it show its work.
What is the best AI for resume tailoring in 2026?
Lumyhired ranks first on six criteria (does the whole loop in one place, keeps your facts, works in English and French, clear pricing, shows what changed, ATS-safe export). It finds postings on 10 job boards, reads the full posting and runs a gap analysis, rewrites the summary, bullets and skills for that one job under rules that forbid new titles, dates, employers or numbers, restores employers, dates and certifications from your original in code, and saves each version in its tracker next to the posting. Plans start at €5 a week with a 3-day money-back guarantee; there is no free plan. Huntr is second, with a reason for each AI edit and 2 free tailored resumes. Teal is the best free starting point. Tailoring goes with more interviews in Huntr's Q1 2026 data: 4.23% per application against 2.07% untailored.
Lumyhired publishes this page. Prices and plans read on vendor pages on 18 September 2026, except ChatGPT (17 September 2026). Page published 18 September 2026.
What does an AI resume tailoring tool actually do?
Every tool in this list runs the same four steps. It parses your resume into sections, reads the job posting and pulls out the skills, tools and duties it asks for, rewrites your summary, bullets and skills list toward those terms, and is supposed to leave your facts alone. The differences between tools sit almost entirely in that last step and in what happens after the rewrite.
Three failure modes come up again and again:
- Invented metrics. A bullet that said you "improved onboarding" comes back as "cut onboarding time by 30%". The number looks good until an interviewer asks how you measured it.
- Keyword stuffing. Tools that score you on keyword coverage push you to add every term in the posting, including tools you never used. Hidden white-text keywords are worse: Built In reported in October 2025, citing New York Times reporting, that Greenhouse found hidden text in about 1% of resumes in the first half of 2025, and parsers strip the color so a recruiter sees it.
- Changed titles and scope. "Software Engineer" becomes "Java Backend Engineer" because the posting says Java, or "helped with" becomes "led". A reference call or background check catches the first; an interview catches the second.

The pressure to stuff comes from a belief that ATS software rejects on missing keywords. The vendor documentation says otherwise. Greenhouse's auto-reject help page (updated 30 January 2026) says automatic rejection comes only from a candidate's answers to yes/no or multiple-choice questions a recruiter has set up as rules. Its Talent Matching FAQ (updated 3 September 2026) sorts candidates into Strong to Limited against recruiter-weighted criteria, counts related terms toward the same skill, and does not reject or advance anyone on its own. Keywords matter when a recruiter searches the database with Boolean terms, and when a person skims the page. The full mechanics are in the guide to how ATS filters actually screen resumes, and how to pick the terms worth using is in finding and placing resume keywords.
The people reading are already wary. In a survey by The Harris Poll for Express Employment Professionals, a staffing company, published 11 February 2026, 86% of 1,002 US hiring managers said AI makes it too easy to exaggerate skills on a resume, and 80% said resumes at least sometimes fail to match a candidate's real skills.
How we ranked the AI resume tailoring tools
We did not run a scored output test, so the order rests on what each vendor documents on its own pages, read on 18 September 2026, and for Lumyhired on its source code, checked the same day. Six criteria, in this order of weight:
- Does the whole loop in one place. Finds the postings, reads each one in full, tailors the resume to it, checks that an ATS can parse the file, and keeps the version you sent linked to the application. Every handoff between separate tools is a place where a version gets lost.
- Keeps your facts. A stated rule, or better, a mechanism in code, that stops it changing titles, dates, employers or numbers and adding tools you have not used.
- Works in English and French. Job boards and tailored output for both languages, for people applying in the US, the UK or France.
- Clear price. What one tailored resume costs, how refunds work, and whether you can judge the output before paying.
- Shows what changed. A diff, a per-suggestion review or a list of additions, so checking takes minutes.
- ATS-safe export. A text-based PDF or a DOCX that a parser can read.

Three of the pages that rank for this search today (Huntr, Rezi and FastApply) are published by a vendor that puts its own product first. Huntr's is the only one that describes a test protocol. This page also puts its publisher first, so weigh the criteria above against what you need.

1. Lumyhired
Best for: Finding postings, tailoring to each one, checking the file and tracking the application in one place
Price: No free plan. Weekly plans €5 (6 tailored resumes a week), €8 (25) or €13 (80), cancel anytime, 3-day money-back guarantee.
What it does well
- Does the whole loop in one account: job search across 10 boards (Indeed, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, France Travail, Remotive, Adzuna, hiring.cafe, startup.jobs, Gradcracker and UK Visa Jobs), tailoring to each posting, an ATS parsing check, and a tracker that keeps each tailored version next to the posting it was made for.
- Reads the full posting and runs a gap analysis first (skills and keywords you are missing, what already matches), then rewrites the summary, bullets and skills for that one job.
- Keeps your facts. Its instructions forbid changing titles, dates, employers or numbers and adding tools you have not used, and after generation the app copies employer names, dates, contact details and certifications back from your original resume in code. We checked both in the source on 18 September 2026.
- Built for English and French job seekers: France Travail is one of the boards searched, and the tailored resume can be written in French.
- Simple weekly pricing from €5, cancel anytime, with a 3-day money-back guarantee. Tailored resumes export as text-based PDFs.
Worth knowing
- No free plan. The free tool is the ATS preview, which shows how a parser reads your file and needs no account.
- No line-by-line accept or reject. You see the tailored resume beside the posting with a list of skills that appear in the new version and not in your original, and edit by hand.
- PDF export only (text-based, single column, five templates), with no DOCX, no visual template gallery and no auto-apply.
2. Huntr
Best for: Reviewing every AI edit before it goes on your resume
Price: Free plan with 2 job-tailored resumes and tracking for up to 100 jobs. Pro $40/month, $90 every 3 months or $160 every 6 months.
What it does well
- You paste the full posting, and each suggested change to your summary, bullets and skills comes with a short reason. You accept, edit or ignore it one at a time.
- Its product page says the tailor rephrases and repositions and cannot invent titles, numbers or skills. The help center tells users not to add skills they lack to raise the score.
- Your base resume stays untouched, each tailored version is tied to a saved job in the tracker, and exports come as PDF or DOCX.
Worth knowing
- Two free tailored resumes, then Pro. At $40 a month it costs more than Teal or Kickresume paid monthly.
- The no-invention promise is the vendor's own statement. Huntr also publishes the interview data quoted later on this page, and its own ranking of tailoring tools puts Huntr first.
3. Teal
Best for: A free resume builder and tracker where you make every edit yourself
Price: Free plan: unlimited resumes and job tracking, top 5 job description keywords, 10 AI bullet credits. Teal+ $13 every 7 days, $29 every 30 days or $79 every 90 days.
What it does well
- You attach the posting and Teal highlights its keywords next to your resume. You write or regenerate bullets yourself, so every change is one you chose.
- The free plan includes unlimited resumes and unlimited tracked jobs, so each application can keep its own version.
- Teal+ shows every keyword from the posting and a Match Score, with unlimited AI bullets and summaries.
Worth knowing
- The pages we read state no rule against invented content in AI bullets, so the check is on you.
- Free keyword matching stops at the top 5 keywords, and paying weekly is the most expensive way to buy Teal+.
4. Kickresume
Best for: A cheap one-click rewrite of a resume already built in Kickresume
Price: One free tailoring after sign-up. Premium $19/month, $27 every 3 months or $54 a year, 14-day money-back guarantee.
What it does well
- You paste the full job ad and it rewrites the summary, experience, skills and education to match.
- The page says it uses only information already in your resume and does not invent anything.
- The yearly plan works out to $4.50 a month, the lowest paid price in this list.
Worth knowing
- The pages we read do not show how you review what changed inside the product, only before and after examples.
- We found no application tracker, so versions per job are yours to name and file.
5. Jobscan
Best for: A detailed match report to check a tailored resume against the posting
Price: Limited free scans each month. Premium $49.95/month or $89.95 every 3 months, with a 7-day trial on the quarterly plan.
What it does well
- The match report compares your resume with the posting and lists what is covered and what is missing, which works as a second check on any tool's output.
- Premium adds AI suggestions to tailor the resume to the job description.
Worth knowing
- The highest published monthly price here, and its plan page only loads after sign-in, so we could not read the free allowance directly.
- No stated rule against adding skills you do not have. A match rate rewards covering keywords, so check each missing term against your real record before adding it.
6. Claude or ChatGPT with a prompt
Best for: Free tailoring when you will check every line yourself
Price: Free tiers. Claude Pro $20/month or $17/month billed yearly. ChatGPT Go $8/month, Plus $20/month.
What it does well
- Reads everything you paste, including a long posting and a long master resume.
- You set the rules, so you can ask for a change log and a list of anything that is not in your original, as in the prompt below.
Worth knowing
- Nothing stops it inventing a number unless your prompt forbids it and you check.
- No formatting, no export, no versions and no record of which resume went to which employer.
7. Simplify
Best for: People already using Simplify's free autofill extension
Price: Copilot autofill and tracker free. Simplify+ price shown only in the app; no public pricing page.
What it does well
- A Keyword Match panel scores your resume against a posting from your tracker or one you paste, and tailored versions never overwrite the original.
- Simplify+ rewrites a whole resume or single bullets against the target job. Exports as PDF or DOCX.
Worth knowing
- Its help center describes pulling missing keywords into existing experience and suggests aiming for 70% keyword coverage, which pushes toward adding terms you may not have used.
- We could not read a price without creating an account.
8. Rezi
Best for: Keyword targeting inside a template-based builder
Price: Free plan: 1 resume, 3 PDF downloads, limited keyword targeting. Pro $29/month, Lifetime $149, 30-day money-back guarantee.
What it does well
- Reads the posting, lists missing keywords and checks each off as you add it.
- PDF and DOCX exports on paid plans, and a lifetime option if you expect several searches.
Worth knowing
- For each missing keyword it offers to write a new bullet containing it and places it under a job. Its own docs warn that inventing skills is risky, and that is the feature most likely to produce it.
- $29 a month is high if tailoring is all you need.
9. FastApply
Best for: High-volume auto-apply with a tailored resume attached
Price: 5 free applications, no card. Tailoring starts on Pro at $25/month on a 90-day plan (500 applications a month); Starter $12.67/month has none.
What it does well
- Pro and Elite write a tailored resume and cover letter for each job it applies to.
- Useful if you have already decided to send hundreds of applications.
Worth knowing
- Tailoring comes bundled with auto-apply, so there is little room to verify each version before it is sent.
- Built for volume. In Huntr's Q1 2026 data, people who sent 100+ applications got interviews at 2.58% per application, against 9.25% for those who sent 11 to 20. Its own blog ranks FastApply first among tailoring tools.
What is the best free AI for resume tailoring?
Free allowances, as read on 18 September 2026, sorted by how much tailoring you get before paying:
- Claude or ChatGPT free tier: free tiers with usage limits, with the prompt below doing the fact-keeping. No export or versions.
- Teal free plan: unlimited resumes and job tracking, the top 5 keywords from each posting, and 10 AI bullet credits.
- Huntr free plan: 2 job-tailored resumes with per-change review, PDF and DOCX export, tracking for up to 100 jobs.
- Kickresume: one free tailoring after sign-up.
- Rezi free plan: 1 resume, 3 PDF downloads and limited keyword targeting.
- Simplify: free autofill and tracker; AI tailoring needs Simplify+.
Lumyhired has no free tailoring. Its one free tool, the ATS preview, runs in your browser with no account and shows the text a parser pulls out of whatever file a tailoring tool exported. That is worth running on any tool's output before you send it. For a broader comparison of resume checkers and scanners, see the best ATS resume tools.
The best AI prompt for resume tailoring, with a verification step
This prompt works in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Mistral's Le Chat. It differs from most prompts you will find in one way: passes 2 and 3 make the model show its changes and flag anything it cannot trace to your resume, which turns checking into a scan of a short list. For the manual method behind it, with before and after bullets and a 15-minute time budget, read how to tailor a resume to a job description.
Copyable prompt: tailor, log, self-audit
Tailor my resume to the job posting below, then audit your own work. JOB POSTING: [paste the full posting] MY MASTER RESUME: [paste your resume as plain text, phone number and address removed] PASS 1: REWRITE - Rewrite only the summary, the order and wording of bullets, and the order of the skills list. - Keep every job title, employer, date, degree and number exactly as written. - Use the posting's term for something only when my resume already describes the same work. - Do not add any tool, skill, certification, result or responsibility that is not in my resume. PASS 2: CHANGE LOG Make a table with four columns: original line | new line | posting phrase it answers | why. PASS 3: SELF-AUDIT List every number, tool, job title and seniority word in the new version. Next to each, quote the line of my master resume it comes from. Mark anything without a source as NOT IN RESUME. Then list the posting's requirements my resume does not show. Do not fill them.
Then do the part the model cannot:
- Delete or fix every line marked NOT IN RESUME. If the model marked nothing, spot-check three numbers anyway; models sometimes quote a source line that does not contain the number.
- Read the change log for scope verbs. If "supported" turned into "owned", restore the original.
- Read the unmet requirements. Leave them unmet on the resume and decide whether to apply anyway.
What good tailoring output looks like: a checklist
Run this on the output of any tool in the list, paid or free, before the file leaves your computer.
- The summary names the target role and backs the posting's top two requirements with facts from your resume.
- The first bullet of each recent role answers a requirement the posting states or repeats.
- Every job title, employer, date and degree matches your master resume character for character.
- Every number matches your records. None were added, rounded up or moved to a different job.
- The skills list holds only skills you have, written the way the posting writes them when it is the same thing.
- No keyword appears more often than it would in normal writing, and nothing is hidden in white text.
- You can see what changed, and you could talk for two minutes about every changed line.
- Text copied out of the exported PDF comes back readable and in order.
- The file is named for the job and logged against it.

When a recruiter calls three weeks later, you need the exact version they have in front of them. A spreadsheet works; so does an application tracker that stores the file with the job. For layout questions, such as columns, headers and PDF versus DOCX, see the best resume format for AI screening.
Does AI resume tailoring get more interviews?
Tailored resumes go with more interviews in the only large public dataset. Huntr's Q1 2026 report, covering 139,927 applications logged by 25,635 job seekers, found an interview rate of 4.23% per application with a tailored resume and 2.07% without. Its 2025 annual report, on 1.78 million applications from more than 57,000 seekers, found 5.8% against 3.73%.
Three limits apply. Huntr sells one of the tailoring tools ranked above, so it has a stake in the result. Its users chose to install a tracker and log whether they tailored, so they are not a random sample. And people who tailor may also pick jobs that fit them better. The data does not separate AI tailoring from tailoring by hand either.
There is also a reason to expect the edge to shrink as more applicants use AI. Cui, Dias and Ye (arXiv working paper, September 2025, revised November 2025) studied a large freelance platform after it launched an AI cover letter tool. Letters matched job posts more closely, but the link between how well a letter matched and whether it got a callback fell by 51%, and employers leaned more on work history. The study covers cover letters on one freelance platform and is not peer reviewed. If the same holds for resumes, the facts under the wording will count for more as more applicants tailor with AI.
Volume cuts the other way. In the same Huntr Q1 2026 data, seekers who sent 11 to 20 applications in total got interviews at 9.25% per application, against 2.58% for those who sent more than 100. That is one reason we rank auto-apply bundles last. The numbers behind a sensible weekly target are in how many jobs to apply to.
Best AI for resume and cover letter together
Several tools above write both from the same posting, which saves pasting it twice. Huntr's free plan includes 2 application packets. Teal's free plan includes 2 AI cover letter credits, unlimited on Teal+. Kickresume Premium includes an AI writer for both. Lumyhired writes the letter from the same resume and posting on its paid plans. FastApply Pro writes both for every application it sends. Claude or ChatGPT will do both in one conversation if you keep the same no-invention rules. The letter-only ranking, with its own prompt, is in the best AI cover letter generators.
Which resume tailoring tool fits your situation
You tailor for most applications and want one place for the whole search. Lumyhired. It finds the postings, tailors to each one without touching your titles, dates or employers, checks the file, and keeps the version with the application, from €5 a week in English or French.
You want to approve every edit one at a time. Huntr, starting with its 2 free tailored resumes.
You want to pay nothing and stay organized. Teal free for tracking and versions, with Claude or ChatGPT and the prompt above for the rewrite.
You want a second check on any output. Jobscan's match report, reading the missing list as questions to answer.
You want the lowest paid price. Kickresume on the yearly plan.
Tailoring is one of several AI jobs in a search. The comparison of search, resume and application tools as a whole is in the best AI tools to find a job in 2026.
