Best AI for resume writing in 2026: 11 tools compared, plus a test you can repeat
Three general chatbots and eight resume tools, compared on criteria stated before the list, with every price and free allowance read on 18 September 2026. The ranking is followed by something the pages ranking for this search do not give you: a sample resume and posting you can run through any tool, the checks to run on what comes back, and three prompts with a verification step.
What is the best AI for resume writing in 2026?
For tailoring the resume you already have to each job and applying, the best AI in 2026 is Lumyhired. It finds postings on 10 job boards, reads each posting in full and runs a gap analysis, rewrites your summary, bullets and skills for that one job without changing titles, dates, employers or numbers, restores employers, dates and certifications from your original in code, checks ATS parsing, and saves each version in its tracker next to the posting, in English or French. Plans start at €5 a week with a 3-day money-back guarantee; there is no free plan. To draft for free, a general chatbot (ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini) with a prompt that forbids new numbers, titles and dates works well if you check every line. Lumyhired starts from an existing resume and does not design one from nothing; for a designed file from scratch, Kickresume is the cheapest over a year at $4.50 a month billed yearly, and Huntr has the most useful free tier.
Lumyhired publishes this page. Prices and plans read on vendor pages on 18 September 2026. Page published 18 September 2026.
Which AI is best for resume writing, by situation
"AI resume tool" covers three different kinds of product, and most comparisons mix them in one list. A chatbot writes whatever you ask for and knows nothing about layout. A resume builder gives you templates and a download, with AI inside the editor. A tailoring or checking tool works on one posting at a time and assumes you already have a resume. Choosing the kind of tool first narrows the list to two or three brands.

You have a resume and you are applying now. Lumyhired. It finds the postings, tailors your resume to each one while keeping your titles, dates and employers, checks the file parses, and keeps the version you sent with the application, from €5 a week. Tailoring each application is worth the effort: in Huntr's Q1 2026 report, 139,927 applications logged by 25,635 users, applications sent with a tailored resume got an interview 4.23% of the time, against 2.07% without. Huntr sells tailoring, its users chose to tailor, and the gap is a correlation, so read it as a direction.
You apply to a few jobs and want to pay nothing. Use a chatbot with the tailoring prompt below, then paste the result into your existing file.
You have no resume, or it is years old. Let a chatbot interview you (prompt 2 below), then pour the answers into a builder for the layout. Kickresume if you are a student or want the lowest yearly price, Huntr or Rezi if you want a free PDF first. Once you have a resume, the first situation applies.
You want to review each change inside a resume builder. Huntr or Teal, which keep saved postings next to the editor.
You want the resume and cover letter from the same material. Most paid builders include letters. Our ranking of AI cover letter generators compares them on the letter alone.

Is it OK to use AI for your resume? What the data says
Candidates use it widely, and employers worry less about the tool than about exaggeration. APEC, the French executive employment agency, surveyed 2,000 professionals in March 2026: 31% of those who had recently looked for a job had used generative AI, up from 15% in December 2024. Of those users, 70% used it for their CV and 77% for cover letters. The same survey found 71% think AI cannot fully replace professional advice on a CV or letter.
On the US hiring side, Express Employment Professionals and the Harris Poll surveyed 1,002 hiring managers in November 2025 (published 11 February 2026). 86% said AI makes it too easy to exaggerate skills on a resume, and 80% said resumes at least sometimes do not match a candidate's real skills. Only 22% of job seekers in the same release admitted listing skills they lack. The survey was commissioned by a staffing company, but the gap between those two numbers is the risk an AI tool adds: it writes a plausible skill or result you never claimed, and you are the one asked about it in the interview.
The software side is less scary than most resume sites suggest. Greenhouse's help center says automatic rejection is triggered only by a candidate's answer to an application question that the recruiter set up as a rule, such as work authorization or location. Its Talent Matching feature sorts candidates into bands from Strong to Limited, counts related terms toward the same skill, does not reject or advance anyone on its own, and sends resumes with formatting problems to "Needs manual review" (help page updated 3 September 2026). Workday's HiredScore grades candidates A to D, and recruiters make the call. None of these documents mentions detecting AI writing. The full model, with the knockout questions and the recruiter search step, is in our guide on how to pass ATS filters in 2026.
For any AI resume tool, that leaves three things to watch: wording can follow the posting, facts have to come from your records, and the file has to parse cleanly.
How we compared the best AI tools for resumes
We did not score the writing quality of each tool, so the order rests on what each vendor documents on its own pages, read on 18 September 2026, and for Lumyhired on its source code, checked the same day, against these criteria in order of weight:
- Does the whole loop in one place. Starts from your existing resume, finds postings, reads each job description in full, tailors to it, checks ATS parsing, and keeps the version you sent with the application.
- Keeps your real experience. Leaves employers, titles, dates and numbers alone, by a documented rule, a mechanism in code, or full control over the instructions.
- Works in English and French. Job boards and output for both languages, for people applying in the US, the UK or France.
- Clear price and free tier. What you can do before paying, how refunds work, and whether the price you see is the price you pay after a trial.
- ATS-safe output and export. A text-based PDF or Word file in a layout parsers read in order.
Before writing, we read the pages on the first page of Google in the US for "best AI for resume" and two close variants, on 18 September 2026 (the Reddit thread at the top would not load for us). Five of the listicles are published by a resume tool that ranks itself first. Several say the tools were tested, but none shows the input it used together with the output it got, only one ranks ChatGPT alongside the dedicated tools, none puts ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini side by side, and only one warns that generators invent achievements. This page also puts its publisher first, so weigh the criteria above against what you need. The test and checks further down are there to fill the gap those pages leave.

1. Lumyhired
Best for: Tailoring an existing resume to each job and applying, with job search, an ATS check and tracking in the same account
Type: Tailoring, ATS check, job search and tracker. Price: No free plan. Weekly plans €5 (6 tailored resumes a week), €8 (25) or €13 (80), cancel anytime, 3-day money-back guarantee.
What it does well
- Does the whole loop from the resume you have to a sent application: imports it (PDF, DOCX, TXT or Markdown), finds postings on 10 boards (Indeed, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, France Travail, Remotive, Adzuna, hiring.cafe, startup.jobs, Gradcracker and UK Visa Jobs), tailors to each one, checks ATS parsing, and keeps each tailored version in the tracker next to the posting.
- Reads the full posting and runs a gap analysis first (skills and keywords you are missing, what already matches), then rewrites the summary, bullets and skills for that one job.
- Keeps your facts. Its instructions forbid changing titles, dates, employers or numbers and adding tools you have not used, and after generation the app copies employer names, dates, contact details and certifications back from your original resume in code. We checked both in the source on 18 September 2026.
- Built for English and French job seekers: France Travail is one of the boards searched, and the tailored resume can be written in French.
- Exports a text-based PDF in plain ATS layouts, and the free ATS preview shows what a parser extracts before you apply.
Worth knowing
- No free plan. The ATS preview is free and needs no account.
- It starts from a resume you already have. It is not a from-scratch visual builder: there is no designed template gallery, and export is PDF only.
- A newer product, without a public review history yet.
2. ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, used with a strict prompt
Best for: Drafting or rewriting a resume for free, when you will check the output yourself
Type: General chatbot. Price: All three have free tiers. ChatGPT Go $8/month, Plus $20/month. Claude Pro $20/month, or $17/month billed yearly. Google AI Plus $7.99/month in the US.
What it does well
- Reads your whole resume and the whole posting when you paste them, with no form fields cutting either down.
- You write the rules, so you can forbid new numbers, titles and dates and ask for a list of every change with its source line.
- Handles cases a template struggles with: a career change, a gap, a move between countries, a resume in two languages.
Worth knowing
- Nothing stops it inventing a result unless your prompt forbids it and you check.
- You get text, so you still need a clean layout and a PDF or Word file from somewhere else.
- You redo the setup for every application, and nothing records which version went where.
3. Teal
Best for: Trying a posting-aware builder for free next to a job tracker
Type: Resume builder and job tracker. Price: Free plan with a limited number of non-renewable AI credits. Teal+ $13 every 7 days, $29 every 30 days or $79 every 90 days.
What it does well
- Builds the resume and keeps the saved postings in the same place, so the job description is already there when you tailor.
- The free plan is enough to judge the AI on a real posting before paying, and Teal says it takes no card for it.
- The 30 and 90 day prices are fixed amounts, with no trial that turns into a different price.
Worth knowing
- The free AI credits do not renew, so heavy editing moves you to Teal+.
- Paying by the week is the most expensive way to buy it: four weeks at $13 cost $52, against $29 for 30 days.
- Teal's pages block automated reading, so we could not confirm its export formats for this page.
4. Huntr
Best for: A free tier that includes real tailoring and a PDF download
Type: Resume builder, tailoring and job tracker. Price: Free plan. Pro $40/month, $90 every 3 months or $160 every 6 months.
What it does well
- The free plan includes unlimited base resumes, free PDF export, all templates and 2 job-tailored resumes.
- Tracks up to 100 jobs on the free plan, so each tailored version is tied to the posting it was made for.
- Publishes its own job search data; its Q1 2026 report is one of the few sources on tailoring and interview rates.
Worth knowing
- Two tailored resumes go quickly if you apply every week.
- $40 is the highest monthly price in this list, and the pricing page we read does not mention refunds.
5. Rezi
Best for: Keyword targeting against a posting inside a plain, ATS-oriented builder
Type: Resume builder. Price: Free plan (1 resume, 3 PDF downloads, limited AI). Pro $29/month. Lifetime $149.
What it does well
- Keyword Targeting aims the resume at the terms of a specific job description.
- Pro includes unlimited downloads in PDF, DOCX and Google Drive, and unlimited AI use.
- A 30-day money-back guarantee on Pro and Lifetime, stated on the pricing page.
Worth knowing
- The free plan stops at one resume and three PDF downloads, and Word export is paid.
- $29 a month is expensive if you only need one resume; the $149 lifetime plan pays off after about five months.
6. Kickresume
Best for: Students, and anyone who wants a designed layout at the lowest yearly price
Type: Resume builder. Price: Free plan without the AI writer. Premium $19/month, $9/month billed quarterly ($27), $4.50/month billed yearly ($54). Free for verified students.
What it does well
- The free plan allows unlimited PDF and DOCX downloads with 4 basic templates, which is rare.
- Verified students (ISIC, ITIC or UNiDAYS) get Premium free, AI writer included.
- A 14-day money-back guarantee on paid plans.
Worth knowing
- The AI resume writer and job-specific tailoring are Premium only, so free users get templates and no AI.
- Pick a single-column template from its 40+ if you apply through job portals.
7. Enhancv
Best for: A visually distinctive resume for roles where a human reads it first
Type: Resume builder. Price: 7-day free access. Pro from $16.50/month, per the pricing page headline.
What it does well
- A Tailor for a Job feature: pick a resume, paste the job ad, and it rewrites toward it.
- Downloads as PDF, or TXT when an application asks for plain text.
Worth knowing
- The free version lasts 7 days, carries Enhancv branding and caps you at 12 section items; after that, downloads need Pro.
- Its refund policy covers cases where something breaks, which is narrower than a money-back guarantee.
- The pricing page did not render prices for automated reading; only the from-$16.50 headline was readable.
8. Jobscan
Best for: Checking an AI-written resume against a posting before you send it
Type: Resume checker. Price: Free: 5 scans a month. Premium $49.95/month, or $89.95 billed quarterly with a 7-day trial.
What it does well
- Compares a resume with a posting and lists missing hard and soft skills, plus formatting advice.
- Five free scans a month cover a small, targeted search.
- Premium adds AI optimizations, a cover letter generator and a LinkedIn profile check.
Worth knowing
- A checker first: it does not replace the tool you write with.
- Its match rate is Jobscan's own model, and employers' systems score differently.
- $49.95 a month is the highest monthly price here.
9. Resume.io
Best for: A quick formatted resume if you will cancel inside the trial
Type: Resume builder. Price: Free: 1 resume, TXT download only. $2.95 for 7 days, then $29.95 every 4 weeks. $49.95 every 3 months.
What it does well
- Unlimited resumes, cover letters and PDF downloads once you pay.
- A 7-day money-back guarantee, stated on the pricing page.
Worth knowing
- The free plan downloads only a TXT file, so a formatted PDF means paying.
- The $2.95 trial renews to $29.95 every 4 weeks unless you cancel within 7 days.
- The pricing page lists no AI limits or AI features.

ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini for resume writing
All three will rewrite a resume well enough if the prompt is strict, and all three will invent a number if it is not. We have not measured one against the others on resume output, and we did not find a public study that has. What differs, on their own pricing pages, is what the free and entry plans give you.
- ChatGPT. Free tier; Go at $8 a month in the US gives more messages and file uploads than free; Plus at $20 a month gives expanded access to OpenAI's most advanced models.
- Claude. Free tier that can search the web and create files; Pro at $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly.
- Gemini. Free app; Google AI Plus at $7.99 a month in the US, the cheapest paid entry of the three, with higher plans above it.
For a single resume, the free tier of any of them is enough. The better test is to paste the same resume, posting and prompt into two of them and keep the version that changed fewer facts. The next section gives you the inputs to do exactly that.
A test you can repeat on any AI resume tool
You can run this in ten minutes on any chatbot free tier or any builder's AI editor. The inputs are fixed so that two tools can be compared on the same material. We publish the inputs and the checks; we do not publish scores, because we did not run every tool on this page under the same conditions.
Fictional example. The candidate, companies, posting and numbers are invented for illustration.
Sample resume (input)
Customer Support Team Lead, Brightline Software, March 2022 to present
- Lead a team of 6 agents handling email and chat for a B2B scheduling product.
- Cut first-response time from 9 hours to 3 by setting up a triage rota in Zendesk.
- Rewrote 40 help-center articles after the 2024 product redesign.
Support Specialist, Brightline Software, June 2019 to February 2022
- Answered about 60 tickets a day; ran onboarding calls for new customers.
Sample posting (input)
Customer Success Manager, Harbor Analytics
- Own a book of 50 mid-market accounts and drive renewals and expansion.
- Run quarterly business reviews with customer stakeholders.
- 3+ years in a customer-facing SaaS role.
- Salesforce and Gainsight a plus; basic SQL preferred.
Give the tool both documents and prompt 1 from the next section. The posting is deliberately a stretch: the candidate has customer-facing SaaS experience but has never owned renewals, and has no Salesforce, Gainsight or SQL. A good output reuses her real results in the posting's language. A bad one fills the gap for her.
What failure looks like
Lines written by us to show the patterns to look for. They were not produced by a specific tool.
| Output line | Problem | Acceptable version |
|---|---|---|
| Managed a book of 50 accounts with a 95% renewal rate. | Invented number, and the 50 was copied from the posting. | Ran onboarding calls for new customers of a B2B SaaS product. |
| Customer Success Manager, Brightline Software, 2019 to present. | Title changed and two roles merged into one date range. | Both original titles and dates, unchanged. |
| Skills: Salesforce, Gainsight, SQL, QBRs, renewals, expansion, churn. | Keyword stuffing: skills she does not have, pasted from the posting. | Skills: Zendesk, help-center writing, team leadership. Gaps listed separately for the cover letter. |
The first pattern is the easiest to miss: numbers from the posting leak into the resume because the model sees them next to each other. The real material still answers the posting well. The rota that cut response time from 9 hours to 3 is a retention story, and the onboarding calls are the closest thing to customer success work she has done. More worked rewrites are in how to tailor your resume to a job description, and finished layouts in our resume examples.
The five checks to run on any AI output

- Numbers. Put the output next to your original and find each number in your own records. Delete any you cannot.
- Titles, employers, dates. Compare them line by line. A changed title is the kind of mismatch a background check or reference call finds.
- Skills. For each skill listed, could you talk about it for two minutes with an example? If not, remove it.
- Keywords. Each term from the posting should sit inside a sentence about something you did. A block of terms reads as stuffing to the recruiter who opens the file. Our guide to resume keywords shows how to pick them.
- Parsing. Export the file and check what a parser extracts: copy all the text out of the PDF, or drop it into our free ATS preview. Layout choices that survive AI screening are covered in the best resume format for AI screening.
Best AI prompts for resume writing, each with a check
These work in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any AI editor that accepts free text. Each one ends with a step that makes the model show its work, which is what makes checking fast.
Prompt 1: tailor an existing resume to a posting
Rewrite my resume bullets for the job posting below. JOB POSTING: [paste the full posting] MY RESUME: [paste your resume as plain text] RULES 1. Keep every employer, job title and date exactly as written. 2. Use only numbers that already appear in my resume. Never add a percentage, a team size, a budget or a count that is not there. 3. Do not add a tool, skill or certification that is not in my resume. If the posting asks for one I lack, list it under GAPS instead. 4. Use the posting's wording only where it describes something I actually did. 5. After the bullets, show a table: new bullet | original resume line it came from. Mark any bullet without a source line as UNSUPPORTED.
Check: every row of the table must quote a real line of your resume. Anything marked UNSUPPORTED goes, and the GAPS list is material for your cover letter or interview prep.
Prompt 2: build a resume from scratch by interview
I need a resume and I have no current version. Interview me first. TARGET ROLE: [job title, or paste one posting you like] STEP 1. Ask me up to 10 questions, one at a time, about my jobs, dates, tools and results. Do not write anything yet. STEP 2. When I have answered, draft a one-page resume in plain text with single-column sections: Summary, Experience, Skills, Education. STEP 3. Use only facts from my answers. Where a bullet would be stronger with a number I did not give, write [NUMBER?] instead of guessing. STEP 4. List every [NUMBER?] and every claim you were unsure about.
Check: replace each [NUMBER?] with a figure from your records or rewrite the bullet around scope (team size, volume, tools) instead. Never let the model fill one in.
Prompt 3: review without rewriting
Review my resume against this job posting. Do not rewrite it. JOB POSTING: [paste] MY RESUME: [paste] Give me: 1. The 5 requirements in the posting that matter most, each with the resume line that proves it, or "not shown". 2. Any title, date or employer that looks inconsistent. 3. Every number on the resume, and a question an interviewer could ask about it. 4. Words or phrases that repeat or read like a keyword list. Keep it under 300 words.
Check: for every "not shown", decide whether you have real evidence that is missing from the resume or a real gap. Only the first kind goes back into the resume.
Best free AI for resume writing: what each free tier gives you
"Free" on a resume tool usually means free to write and paid to download. As read on 18 September 2026:
- Free to write and download with AI: Huntr (2 job-tailored resumes, free PDF export). A chatbot on a free tier, if you paste its text into your own template.
- Free download, no AI: Kickresume (unlimited PDF and DOCX with 4 basic templates; the AI writer is Premium, free for verified students).
- Free with tight limits: Rezi (1 resume, 3 PDF downloads, limited AI), Teal (AI credits that do not renew), Jobscan (5 scans a month, as a checker).
- Free to try, paid to keep: Enhancv (7 days, branded), Resume.io (TXT download only; the $2.95 trial renews at $29.95 every 4 weeks).
- No free plan: Lumyhired, apart from the ATS preview.
