How to write a teacher resume

Put certification in its own block at the top: state, certificate name, subject area, grade band, and expiry date or status. District HR teams often screen on certificate area and grade band before reading anything else, and a certificate mentioned only under Education can be missed.

Give the grade, subject and setting for every role: '7th grade math, 5 sections, Title I campus, one co-taught inclusion section'. A principal reads that line and knows what your classroom looked like.

Report student results as class or grade-level figures from a named assessment over a stated period. Keep everything aggregate. Nothing on the page should identify a student, which is also what student privacy rules such as FERPA expect.

Name the platforms. Google Classroom, Canvas, Schoology, PowerSchool and NWEA MAP are screened as literal terms, and 'educational technology' matches none of them.

Why teacher applications get screened out

These are the failures specific to this role: the ones a generic CV guide will not warn you about.

  • Certification missing, expired or vague, with no state, subject area or grade band, so the screen cannot match it to the opening.
  • No grade level or subject listed for each role, leaving the principal to guess what you taught.
  • Duty-list bullets ('planned lessons, graded papers, managed the classroom') that describe every teacher in the pile.
  • No mention of differentiation, IEP or 504 work in a posting that asks for it.
  • Student results claimed with no assessment, time period or group size behind them.
  • Technology described as 'technology integration' with no named LMS, student information system or assessment tool.
  • Student teaching listed with no school, grade or length of placement on a first-year teacher's resume.

What drives pay for this role

Most US public school teachers are paid from a published salary schedule, so pay is set by where you land on it. Steps usually track years of credited experience, and lanes track education: a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and graduate credits beyond each. The district is the biggest lever, because each one sets or negotiates its own schedule and neighboring districts can differ widely. Other levers: how many prior years a new district will credit when you move, stipends for coaching, department leadership or hard-to-staff areas such as special education and bilingual education, National Board Certification where the state or district rewards it, and whether the school is a traditional public, charter or private school, since charter and private schools may not use a schedule at all.

Teacher resume questions

Where should my teaching certificate go?
At the top, in a Certification section directly under your name and contact line. List the state, certificate type, subject area and grade band, plus the expiry date or status. If the certificate is pending, say so with the expected date, for example 'Texas Educator Certificate, Mathematics 4-8, expected May 2027'. If you have passed the content exam and are waiting on issuance, name the exam and the date you passed it.
How do I show student growth without sharing student data?
Use aggregate results from a named assessment: the share of a class or grade meeting a benchmark at the start and end of a stated period. Leave out names, initials, and any group small enough to point to a particular child.
I am a first-year teacher. What goes in the experience section?
Student teaching, written up like a job: school, grade, subject, length of the placement, and the units you planned and taught yourself. Add substitute teaching, tutoring, camp or coaching work with the same age group, and name the platforms you used in each.
Can I use my certificate in another state?
Often, with conditions. Most states have reciprocity arrangements, but many still require their own exams, extra coursework or a provisional license first. Check with the education department of the state you are applying to, then state your status plainly on the resume, for example 'Eligible for Colorado license through reciprocity, application submitted'.
Should I include a teaching philosophy?
Keep it off the resume. A district that wants one will ask for it in the application or at interview. Use the summary for the facts a screener checks: certification, grade band, subject and years in the classroom.
