Student Resume Example

A student resume is read for potential, and the evidence for potential is scattered: an internship, a class project, a part-time job, a club role. This example pulls those into one page that a recruiter or an application system can read in seconds, with the degree and graduation date where they look first.

How to write a student resume

Education goes first while you are in school or within about a year of graduating. Give the degree, major, minor, university, and expected graduation month and year. Employers hiring for internships and new-graduate programs check the date to see whether you fit their start window.

Write every piece of experience the same way: what you did, with which tools, and what came of it. An internship, a class project and a weekend job all fit that format, and writing them alike lets a recruiter compare them.

Keep part-time jobs, including unrelated ones. Serving customers, running a register, training new staff and working through a full course load all show reliability, which is what an entry-level screener is checking for.

Add relevant coursework only when it matches the posting, as one line of course names. A list of every class you have taken uses space a project bullet would use better.

Why student applications get screened out

These are the failures specific to this role: the ones a generic CV guide will not warn you about.

  • No graduation date, so the screener cannot tell whether you fit an internship cycle or a new-graduate start date.
  • An objective statement about wanting to learn and grow, which takes the top of the page and says nothing specific about you.
  • Class projects described by topic alone, with no tools, team size or personal contribution.
  • GPA left off when the posting asks for it, which some application systems treat as a missing requirement.
  • Part-time and service jobs dropped entirely, leaving a page that looks emptier than the candidate's actual week.
  • Work authorization left unclear for international students on F-1 status, which stalls the application at the first recruiter call.
  • A two-page resume, a photo, or a decorative two-column template, each of which reads as inexperience at entry level.
  • An unprofessional email address, or a personal one where the posting expects the university address.

What drives pay for this role

Pay at this stage depends mostly on the field and the type of role. Internships may pay hourly or a fixed stipend, and some are unpaid or for academic credit, under rules that vary by country and state. For entry-level offers, the levers are the industry and function (technical and finance roles generally price above nonprofit and media work), the city and its cost of living, whether the employer runs a structured graduate program with a set starting rate, and relevant internship experience, which some employers credit at the offer stage. Compare the whole offer, including any signing bonus, relocation support and benefits.

Student resume questions

Should I put my GPA on my resume?
Put it on when the posting asks for it and when it helps you. Some employers, particularly in finance, consulting and engineering, use it as an early filter, and a missing GPA can read as a low one. If your major GPA is stronger than your overall GPA, list both and label each clearly.
What if I have no internship?
Use what you have, written as evidence: class projects with real data or a real client, research with a professor, campus jobs, club leadership, volunteering and part-time work. Name the tools you used and what each piece of work produced.
Should I include high school?
Usually only in your first year or two of college, or when it adds something the posting cares about, such as a relevant award. Once you have college coursework, projects or jobs, high school details take space better spent on them.
Does a student resume have to be one page?
Yes, in almost every case. Recruiters for internships and entry-level roles expect one page, and fitting it on one page also shows you can decide what matters. Cut older or weaker items before shrinking the font below a readable size.
How do I list a degree I have not finished?
Write the expected date: 'B.S. Economics, expected May 2027'. That is standard and honest, and it lets an application system read the graduation date correctly. Never write the degree as if it had already been awarded.
