Mechanical Engineer Resume Example

The question behind every mechanical engineering shortlist is whether your designs ever reached production. Concepts and student projects are easy to describe; parts that were manufactured, tested and shipped are not. This example shows how to make that distinction visible, and how to keep the CAD and tolerancing keywords a filter needs.

Summary

Mechanical design engineer with 6 years taking assemblies from concept through detailed design to production release. Native in SolidWorks and Creo, comfortable with GD&T and stack-up analysis, and used to defending a design in a DFMEA review. Has owned parts through tooling, first article inspection and production ramp rather than handing a model over at the concept stage.

Skills

  • SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, Inventor
  • AutoCAD and 2D detailing
  • FEA (ANSYS, Abaqus, SolidWorks Simulation)
  • GD&T to ASME Y14.5 and tolerance stack-up analysis
  • Design for manufacture and assembly (DFM/DFA)
  • Materials selection, surface treatment and heat treatment
  • Thermal and fluid systems design
  • Manufacturing processes (CNC machining, injection moulding, sheet metal, casting)
  • Prototyping, test rig design and validation testing
  • PLM systems (Windchill, Teamcenter) and engineering change control
  • DFMEA and 8D root cause analysis
  • MATLAB and Python for engineering analysis
  • ISO 9001, ISO 13485, ASME standards as applicable

Experience

Mechanical Engineer

Northwind Labs, 2022 to Present

  • Designed a 40-part electromechanical assembly from concept to production release in Creo, now manufactured at a run rate of roughly 8,000 units per year.
  • Cut piece-part cost by 19% on an existing housing through a DFM review, consolidating three machined components into a single injection moulded part with the tooling change costed and justified.
  • Ran structural FEA in ANSYS on a load-bearing bracket, correlated the model against strain gauge results from a physical test rig, and revised the rib geometry to pass a 3x design load requirement.

Associate Mechanical Engineer

Brightline Group, 2019 to 2022

  • Resolved a field failure traced to a tolerance stack-up across four mating parts by re-datuming the drawings to ASME Y14.5 and tightening two features rather than all of them.
  • Wrote and executed the qualification test protocol for a new product family, covering vibration, thermal cycling and ingress testing, and produced the report used for release sign-off.
  • Led the engineering change process for a supplier material substitution, including DFMEA update, sample validation and drawing revision through Windchill.
  • Designed and built two test rigs for durability testing, reducing the cycle time for a full validation run from three weeks to eight days.

Education

Bachelor of Science

Riverton University, 2015 to 2019

How to write a mechanical engineer resume

Name the CAD package, every time. SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, NX and Inventor are not interchangeable to a keyword filter, and a team that runs one of them hires for it specifically. Listing 'CAD' matches none of them.

Say what reached production. 'Designed a bracket' and 'designed a bracket now manufactured at 8,000 units a year' describe completely different levels of experience, and the second one is what separates candidates several years in.

Show the tolerancing vocabulary if the role involves detailing drawings. GD&T, datum schemes and stack-up analysis are specific competencies that many resumes skip entirely, and their absence is read as a gap.

If you claim FEA, say something about loads, boundary conditions or correlation against test. Analysis claimed without any of that is treated as tutorial-level until proven otherwise, and reasonably so.

Why mechanical engineer applications get screened out

These are the failures specific to this role: the ones a generic CV guide will not warn you about.

  • CAD listed generically instead of the specific package, missing the literal term the posting screens for.
  • Designs described with no indication that anything was manufactured, which leaves the reader assuming it was not.
  • No GD&T or tolerancing content on a resume for a role whose daily output is detailed drawings.
  • FEA or CFD claimed with no mention of loads, assumptions or validation against physical test.
  • Professional registration or the sector's mandatory standard omitted where the industry treats it as a gate.
  • University projects still occupying the top of the page several years into a working career.
  • Nothing about change control, PLM or release process, which is most of the real job in an established engineering organisation.

What drives pay for this role

Sector is the largest lever in mechanical engineering: aerospace, medical device, semiconductor and energy work generally prices above general manufacturing for comparable experience, largely because of the regulatory and qualification burden. Beyond that: whether you own designs through to production and qualification rather than handing off at concept, specialism (thermal, structural, controls, manufacturing engineering and test all differ), experience in a regulated framework such as ISO 13485 or aerospace quality standards, professional registration where the employer requires it, and location, where proximity to an industrial cluster matters more than in most professions because the employers are physically concentrated.

Mechanical Engineer resume questions

Which CAD packages should I list?
The ones you could sit down and work in tomorrow, named individually, with a note on the level if it varies. It is worth listing a package you have used less if the posting names it, but say so honestly. Being handed a Creo seat on day one after listing it loosely is a bad first week.
How do I describe work covered by an NDA?
Describe the engineering, not the product. Assembly size, materials, load cases, manufacturing process, tolerances, test regime, production volume in round terms. All of that demonstrates capability and none of it identifies a client programme. If even the sector is restricted, describe the physics and the process.
Do I need a PE licence or chartered status?
It depends entirely on the sector and the jurisdiction. In civil-adjacent, pressure equipment, building services and some consultancy work it can be a requirement or close to one. In product design and manufacturing it is far less often a gate. Read the posting rather than generalising, and if you are working toward it, say so with the stage you are at.
How long should my final-year project stay on the resume?
Until you have production or industrial work to replace it, which is usually one to two roles in. Keep it longer only if it is genuinely relevant to the posting, such as a project in the same physical domain. After that it takes space from work that shows you can deliver under manufacturing and cost constraints.
Should I list FEA if I have only run simple studies?
List it and qualify it. 'SolidWorks Simulation for first-order static checks' is accurate and still useful. Listing 'FEA' unqualified next to a role that wants nonlinear or dynamic analysis sets up an interview you will not enjoy, and the calibration question comes early.
