Financial Analyst Resume Example

The hardest thing to prove on a financial analyst resume is that you can actually build a model, because everyone writes 'advanced Excel'. This example shows how to evidence modelling, forecasting and variance work in a way a finance manager can assess before interview.

Summary

Financial analyst with 5 years in FP&A supporting commercial and operational teams. Owns the rolling forecast for two business units, builds the models behind capex and pricing decisions, and writes the variance commentary the leadership team reads before the monthly review. Strong Excel modelling, working SQL, and comfortable rebuilding a planning process that has quietly stopped being trusted.

Skills

  • Three-statement financial modelling
  • DCF, NPV and valuation analysis
  • Budgeting, annual planning and rolling forecasts
  • Variance analysis and management commentary
  • Scenario and sensitivity analysis
  • Excel (Power Query, INDEX/MATCH, model build and audit)
  • SQL for finance data extraction
  • Power BI, Tableau, Looker Studio
  • Planning systems (Anaplan, Adaptive Planning, Oracle Hyperion, SAP BPC)
  • ERP reporting (SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Dynamics)
  • KPI, board and investor reporting packs
  • Business case and capex appraisal

Experience

Financial Analyst

Northwind Labs, 2022 to Present

  • Owned the rolling 12-month forecast for 2 business units totalling roughly 40% of group revenue, improving forecast accuracy against actuals from a 9% average variance to under 4% over three cycles.
  • Rebuilt the annual budget model as a driver-based three-statement model with documented assumptions, replacing a 14-tab workbook with hard-coded overrides that nobody could audit.
  • Produced monthly variance analysis and commentary for the leadership review, flagging a margin decline in one product line two months before it appeared in the headline result.

Associate Financial Analyst

Brightline Group, 2019 to 2022

  • Built the financial case for a capex investment, including sensitivity analysis across three volume scenarios; the case was approved and the project delivered within the modelled payback window.
  • Automated the monthly reporting pack using Power Query against the ERP extract, reducing preparation from roughly two days to half a day and removing a manual copy-paste step that had caused two restatements.
  • Wrote SQL extracts against the data warehouse to replace finance's dependency on a weekly report request queue with the analytics team.

Education

Bachelor of Science

Riverton University, 2015 to 2019

How to write a financial analyst resume

Describe the model, not the tool. Say what it modelled, how many drivers or entities it covered, who used it and what decision it supported. 'Advanced Excel' is claimed by everyone and verified by nobody until the modelling test.

Separate yourself from accounting clearly. If you forecast and analyse, say so; if you also close the books, say that too. The ambiguity is the thing that gets these applications passed over for both roles.

Name the planning system. Anaplan, Adaptive Planning, Hyperion and SAP BPC are screened literally, and implementation or model-building experience in one of them is a genuine differentiator.

State CFA progress precisely. 'CFA Level II candidate' is honest and helpful. 'CFA' when you have not been awarded the charter is the kind of thing that ends an application when it is checked.

Why financial analyst applications get screened out

These are the failures specific to this role: the ones a generic CV guide will not warn you about.

  • 'Advanced Excel' claimed with no model described, in a screening process that will test exactly that within one round.
  • FP&A and accounting work blurred together, so the reader cannot tell whether you forecast forward or close backwards.
  • No planning or consolidation system named, when many postings filter on Anaplan, Adaptive, Hyperion or SAP BPC as hard requirements.
  • Forecasting described without accuracy, cycle length or the scope covered, which leaves the quality of the output unknowable.
  • CFA stated ambiguously rather than by level or charter status, which reads as overclaiming when verified.
  • Analysis listed with no decision attached, which is the same failure that sinks data analyst resumes and for the same reason.

What drives pay for this role

Pay here tracks the function more than the title. Corporate FP&A, commercial finance, investment analysis and corporate development all sit at different levels for the same years of experience, so read the responsibilities before comparing offers. The other levers: company size and structural complexity (multi-entity, multi-currency groups pay above single-entity businesses), whether you own a model and a forecast cycle or feed someone else's, professional qualification status (CFA, ACA, ACCA, CIMA, where the employer treats it as a requirement), technical breadth beyond Excel into SQL and a planning system, and location, where financial centres carry a clear premium.

Financial Analyst resume questions

Financial analyst or accountant, which roles should I apply to?
Ask which direction your work points. Accounting records and reports what happened, under a reporting standard, on a close timetable. Analysis explains why it happened and models what happens next. Many people do both, but a resume that does not choose an emphasis competes badly for either, because each hiring manager is scanning for their own vocabulary.
How do I prove modelling ability on paper?
Describe one model concretely: what it was for, its structure, the drivers, who relied on it, and what it was used to decide. If you rebuilt an existing model, say what was wrong with the old one. Reviewers who model for a living can tell within two lines whether you have actually done it.
Does the CFA help for an FP&A role?
Less than candidates often expect. The charter carries most weight in investment management, research and corporate development. In corporate FP&A an accounting qualification or demonstrated modelling and business partnering usually counts for more. List your level honestly either way; it never hurts, it just does not always do the work you want it to.
Do I need SQL?
Increasingly yes, and it is a cheap differentiator. Many analyst roles still run on ERP extracts and Excel, but the ones that ask for SQL tend to be the better-scoped roles, and being able to pull your own data removes a dependency that slows finance teams down constantly.
How do I show my work when the numbers are confidential?
Use proportions and structure instead of absolutes. 'Two business units representing around 40% of group revenue', 'a forecast across 9 cost centres', 'a three-scenario model with a modelled payback under two years'. Scope comes through clearly and nothing commercially sensitive leaves the building.
