Director of Finance Resume Example

The most common mistake on a finance director resume is that it reads like a very good financial controller's. At this level the technical competence is assumed and the question is what the function did for the business under your leadership. This example shows how to write scope, mandate and commercial outcome first.

Summary

Finance director and qualified accountant leading a 14-person function across 5 legal entities in 3 countries, reporting to the CEO and to a board with private equity representation. Brought in to make the numbers trustworthy and then to make them useful: rebuilt the close, replaced the ERP, and built an FP&A capability that the commercial teams now come to before decisions rather than after. Comfortable in the boardroom and in the detail when the detail is what matters.

Experience

Director of Finance

Northwind Labs, 2022 to Present

  • Led a finance function of 14 across 5 legal entities and 3 countries, covering financial control, FP&A, treasury and transactional finance through 3 direct reports.
  • Reported monthly to a board including private equity investors, owning the board pack, the covenant reporting and the quarterly investor update.
  • Cut the group consolidation and close from 15 working days to 7 by standardising the chart of accounts across entities and moving intercompany reconciliation into the system rather than a spreadsheet.

Associate Director of Finance

Brightline Group, 2019 to 2022

  • Led the selection and implementation of a new ERP across all 5 entities, delivered without a missed statutory deadline and with the legacy system decommissioned on schedule.
  • Improved working capital by tightening the collections process and renegotiating payment terms with the three largest suppliers, releasing cash without drawing on the facility.
  • Built the FP&A function from a single analyst to a team of 3, moving finance from retrospective reporting to a rolling forecast the commercial directors use in their own planning.
  • Supported two acquisitions through financial due diligence and post-deal integration, including bringing both onto the group reporting calendar within one quarter.
  • Managed the refinancing process with the lending bank, including the covenant model and the forecast pack supporting the facility.

How to write a director of finance resume

Open with the mandate, not the qualification. The board wants to know what you were brought in to do and whether you did it. The ACA or CPA is one line near your name; it is a ticket to the conversation, not the argument.

Give the scope numbers every time: team size, entity count, jurisdictions, and revenue scale in a band. At this level these are the entire basis of comparison between two candidates with identical titles.

State the ownership context. Running finance in a private equity portfolio company, a listed group, and an owner-managed business are three different jobs with different reporting rhythms and different stakeholders, and recruiters filter on exactly this.

Two pages is right, three is defensible with a long history. What does not work is a third page of early-career technical roles described in the same detail as the last one.

Why director of finance applications get screened out

These are the failures specific to this role: the ones a generic CV guide will not warn you about.

  • A resume that reads as a senior controller's, listing technical accounting tasks rather than what the finance function delivered for the business.
  • No team size, entity count or revenue band, which removes the only basis on which executive scope can be compared.
  • No board or investor exposure mentioned, when reporting into a board is usually the step change the hire is meant to cover.
  • A summary that opens with qualifications and years rather than the mandate you were given and what you did with it.
  • Ownership context omitted, so a recruiter filtering for private equity or listed-company experience cannot place you.
  • No systems or transformation content, in a decade where ERP replacement and finance automation are a standard part of the role.
  • Three or more pages weighted toward early-career detail, which signals a candidate who has not decided what the role actually is.

What drives pay for this role

At this level the package matters more than the salary line, because bonus and any long-term incentive often exceed base progression and their terms vary enormously. The levers on the whole package: revenue scale and the structural complexity behind it (entity count, jurisdictions, currencies), team size and the seniority of your direct reports, ownership structure, since private equity backed and listed environments carry different demands and different incentive designs, whether the role carries genuine board accountability or reports into a group CFO, sector, and location. Whether the position is positioned as a step to CFO also changes both the brief and what is offered against it, so read the reporting line carefully.

Director of Finance resume questions

How long should an executive finance resume be?
Two pages for most, three if a long and genuinely varied history needs it. The discipline is in the weighting: the most recent two roles should take the majority of the space, and everything before that compresses to organisation, title, scope and one line of outcome.
Do I still list my accounting qualification?
Yes, one line, near your name, with the body. It is checked and its absence is noticed. What changes at this level is that it stops being an argument for your candidacy and becomes a precondition, so it should take one line rather than a section.
How do I show scope without disclosing confidential figures?
Use bands and structure. 'A group with revenue in the mid nine figures', 'five legal entities across three jurisdictions', 'a finance team of 14 through three direct reports', 'a refinancing with the lending bank'. That conveys the level precisely and discloses nothing that a current or former employer could object to.
How much technical accounting detail belongs on the page?
Enough to establish that you can still hold a technical conversation, and no more. One or two references to consolidation, a complex standard you have applied, or an audit position you defended will do it. Beyond that the resume starts reading like the controller's, which is the most common failure mode at this level.
Should I explain why I am looking to move?
No. A resume that pre-empts the question raises it. Keep the reason for the cover letter or the first conversation, where you can read the room and answer in context rather than committing a single sentence to paper.
